{"id":2798,"date":"2008-06-04T19:21:37","date_gmt":"2008-06-05T00:21:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.aberfoylesecurity.com\/?p=2798"},"modified":"2016-06-01T19:23:11","modified_gmt":"2016-06-02T00:23:11","slug":"afghanistans-taliban-contest-nato-commanders-assessment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.aberfoylesecurity.com\/?p=2798","title":{"rendered":"Afghanistan\u2019s Taliban Contest NATO Commander\u2019s Assessment"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Andrew McGregor<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>June 4, 2008<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A statement from the Afghan Taliban leadership has challenged an assessment of the military situation in Afghanistan given by outgoing International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) commander General Dan McNeill in an interview with the BBC\u2019s Pashto language service (Voice of Jihad, May 28).<\/p>\n<p>McNeill, who is turning over command of NATO\u2019s ISAF contingent to General David McKiernan on June 3, was reported as saying that ISAF has made considerable progress in the military and reconstruction aspects of its mission in the last year, as well as describing the Taliban\u2019s campaign as little more than a series of roadside bombs, suicide attacks and ambushes.<\/p>\n<p>The Taliban responded to these remarks by asking: \u201cWhat blind, deaf or senseless person will accept remarks by McNeill\u2014this commander of the forces of barbarism and darkness\u2014that the NATO forces in Afghanistan are more powerful than they have been at any other time and are more superior now to the mujahideen of the Islamic Emirate?
